# Area and Perimeter

Today in class we spent time learning and clarifying the meanings of the two terms area and perimeter.

Area is the amount of space on the surface of a shape, or inside a two dimensional shape.

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.

Here a a song that might help you to remember the difference between the two!

This activity below will help you remember the difference between the two terms and show you how to calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes.

1. I love the song. My students use perimeter measures around the rim. When they write the word they box the letters rim.

• @Kimberly,

Thanks for the post and the ideas about perimeter. We had a go at writing our own songs today which were quite effective in helping us to remember the difference.

2. Hi, what a great blog! I found this site from the g2 challenge. I like the widgets in the side bar under Main Menu and Things to Do. Can you tell me how you got those?
My 5/6 class have just started a unit on area and perimeter. I will get them to check out your site too.
thanks, Rebecca

• Thanks for visiting and commenting on our blog Rebecca.

In order to create the side menu you need to insert a text widget. You can then put any widgets in using HTML (hypertext markup language). If you are not familiar with HTML, there is a starters guide here: http://2kmand2kj.global2.vic.edu.au/learn-about-blogging/learn-html/. All of our links are just picture images I have made and then inserted using HTML.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them or send me an email.
